Qualifications for Office

United States Senator
• Qualified elector
• At least 30 years of age
• Must be a qualified elector of the state where election is sought

United State Representative
• Qualified elector
• At least 25 years of age
• Must be a qualified elector of the state where election is sought

Governor
• Qualified elector
• At least 30 years of age
• United States citizen for 20 years
• Resident of the state for 5 years
• Qualifying fee is $300

Lt. Governor
• Qualified elector
• At least 30 years of age
• United States citizen for 20 years
• Resident of the state for 5 years
• Qualifying fee is $200

Secretary of State
• Qualified elector
• At least 25 years of age
• Resident of state for 5 years
• Qualifying fee is $200

Attorney General
• Qualified elector
• Practicing attorney for 5 years
• At least 26 years of age
• Resident of state for 5 years
• Qualifying fee is $200

State Auditor
• Qualified elector
• At least 25 years of age
• Resident of state for 5 years
• Qualifying fee is $200

State Treasurer
• Qualified elector
• At least 25 years of age
• Resident of state for 5 years
• Qualifying fee is $200

Commissioner of Insurance
• Qualified elector
• At least 25 years of age
• Resident of state for 5 years
• Qualifying fee is $200

Commissioner of Agriculture
• Qualified elector
• Must have a general knowledge of agriculture, mining, manufacturing, statistics, and general industries and an experienced and practical agriculturist.
• Qualifying fee is $200

Public Service Commissioner
• Qualified elector
• Must be a resident in the Supreme Court District in which election is sought
• At least 25 years of age
• Resident of state for 5 years
• Qualifying fee is $200

Transportation Commissioner
• Qualified elector
• Must be a resident in the Supreme Court District in which election is sought
• Qualifying fee is $200

State Senator
• Qualified elector of the state for 4 years
• At least 25 years of age
• A resident for two years of the district to be represented

State Representative
• Qualified elector of the state for 4 years
• At least 21 years of age
• A resident for two years of the district to be represented

Chancery Clerks, Circuit Clerks, and Tax Assessor and/or Tax Collector
• Qualified elector of the county in which election is sought
• Qualifying fee is $15

Coroner
• Qualified elector of the county in which election is sought
• At least 21 years of age
• Qualifying fee is $10

County Prosecutor
• Qualified elector of the county in which election is sought
• Must be a regular and practicing attorney
• Qualifying fee is $15

County Surveyor
• Qualified elector of the county in which election is sought
• Must be a registered land surveyor

Sheriff
• Qualified elector of the county in which election is sought
• Qualifying fee is $15

Superintendent of Education
• Qualified Elector
• Must hold a valid Class AA Administrator’s certificate issued by the State Department of Education
• Must have no less than 4 years of classroom and/or administrative experience

County Supervisor
• Qualified elector of the county and district in which election is sought
• Qualifying fee is $15
