Public Safety
The Mississippi Republican Party believes a primary function of state and local government is the safety and protection of citizens, and the maintenance of law and order. Violent crime threatens our families and burdens our taxpayers. Punishment for crime should be fair, speedy, and certain. Victims of crime should not be further harmed by a system that gives deference to the criminal. We believe the training, equipping, and adequate paying of our first responders is necessary to ensure public safety.
We believe prisoners should be incarcerated at the lowest possible cost to taxpayers. Violent criminals should be sentenced to long terms and serve the time without endless debate over parole eligibility. Criminals sentenced to capital punishment should face their execution within a realistic time of the crime without the endless emotional assault on victims and the financial burden on the pocketbooks of the taxpayers.
Mississippi Republicans applaud the development of church and community-based rehabilitation programs for non-violent offenders. We urge our state’s policy makers to expand the ability of such citizen-run efforts to lessen the burden on our corrections system while serving to help people get their lives back in order. We support the utilization of drug courts to ensure participants pay for their crimes while providing an opportunity to return addicts to functioning, family oriented, taxpaying members of society rather than a draining burden on the prison system.
The Mississippi Republican Party believes America remains the land of opportunity where peoples from all over the world may immigrate and one day become Americans with all the rights and duties described in our Constitution. We believe those coming to our country should follow legal procedures. When foreign nationals violate our laws and enter our country illegally, they are a threat to our security and once arrested, should face the penalties of our laws. We believe a secure border is necessary before reasonable reforms in migrant worker policies can be enacted. We believe illegal immigrants should not be eligible for Medicaid, welfare, unemployment benefits, food stamps, or to receive a driver’s license in Mississippi.
The Mississippi Republican Party strongly supports the individual right to own guns that is explicitly protected by the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment. We believe an armed citizenry exercising its right to bear arms demonstrates individual responsibility in defense of life and property, and offers a front line defense against criminals.
